Development Approaches, AUGUST 29–SEPTEMBER 04, 2006
The new development paradigms that were introduced by the political
and economic giants of the west have so far been focused on economic
hegemony, bringing the fourth phase of capitalism into play; the
globalization. From WWII to the present time where hidden face of
globalization is now revealed, many development philosophies have
been introduced by the developed world to treat our backwardness.
For instance, the concept of alternative development (also
considered as separate paradigm of development) is the one. This
philosophy has been used as a deodorant to hide the stench of the
mainstream development being experimented in South Asia, Latin
America and Africa in the name of Social Action Program, Rural
Development Program, etc. Less said is better about the fate of
these programs. They have been just unable to strengthen the
indigenous social, political and economic structures & relationships
and to improve the living standards of the marginalized people.
Whereas the profits still continue to grow for the west due to these
programs, the rich-poor disparity in under-developed or colonized
countries is widening each day, pushing people to fight for their
survival amid the political economy of hunger.
In view of the social, political and economic disparities and
absence of any indigenous development models, Church World
Service-Pakistan/Afghanistan has decided to arrange training on
“Development Approaches” for the development activists.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the training are to:
Provide participants with a series of development frameworks through
which to examine how development efforts (attempt to) manage and
sustain projects to reduce poverty.
Understand and incorporate development concepts by using approaches
for the sustainability of projects.
Address gender and other key development issues, concerns,
institutional mechanisms and processes.
