Muslim Aid UK’s Pakistan Field Office has taken care of more than 4,000
earthquake affectees in the tent villages for the period of 6 months, where
they were provided emergency relief, shelter & bedding, food & clothing and
medication.
This was stated by Mr. Rizwan Baig, Programme Manager - South, Muslim Aid UK
at the “Development Forum” of NGORC on October 26, 2007.
Muslim Aid was founded in London in November 1985, by 23 leading British
Muslim organizations, in response to continuing conflicts and disasters
around the world. Its aim is to alleviate the suffering of the victims of
poverty, war and natural disasters.
Mr. Baig informed that in the 2005 earthquake emergency, Muslim Aid UK spent
Rs 30 million on provision of shelter, food and medicine; Rs 2 million on
Eid gifts; Rs 11.5 million on Qurbani; Rs 8.5 million on income generation (Microcredit)
Rs 2 million on skills development centers.
Giving further details, he said at Balakot, Shohal Tent Village the Muslim
Aid hosted 1,000 people for six months, provided utensils, bedding to each
family and free medical treatment to over 7,000 patients in 20 days.
Similarly, at Islamabad’s H-11 Tent Village, Muslim Aid accommodated 2,400
people in 300 tents, for six months. It provided schooling, vocational
training, English and computer short courses and recreational activities for
children.
In Azad Jamu and Kashmir (AJK), it hosted about 200 families in tent
villages of Sarran, Muzafarabad and Bagh, where tents and blankets were
distributed among 275 families, food packets among 660 families at Bagh,
Poonch and Muzafarabad and arranged 100 tents at Bagh.
Besides earthquake relief activities, Muslim Aid also provides relief to the
affectees of natural calamities like floods, cyclones and rains in Pakistan.
In the development sector, Muslim Aid works in the sectors like Emergency
Relief, Education, Healthcare, Orphan Care, Economic Empowerment, Water and
Sanitation, Specialist Programmes and Seasonal Programmes.
In the education sector, it is providing teachers training, vehicles,
science and computer labs in schools, setting up Adult Literacy Centres. So
far it has established 50 centres at Fateh Jang and three in Lahore.
Over 35 participants from various development sector organizations of
Karachi attended the Forum and took part in discussion.
